My deceased father Robert could sometimes stare with his eyes into nothing. I had the objection that he thought of the sea. On the sea he had stored in the water from his brain. A sea in the south, bathed in the brightest sunlight you know. From my memory; ‘with his fishing line, he takes silver fish from the water in sharp contrast to his black hair and dark tanned skin. With a cloth he then takes the squatting creature and killed it on the edge of the boat. He does so expertly. He will certainly have learned that from his Dutch friend Bas. We will all die, one day. The one more violent than the other.  The Sea, 2016.

Please Painter Paint

On 8 November 2016 the exhibition "Please Painter Paint" opened at auction house Bernaerts. In this exhibition, Peter Weidenbaum focused on the city of Antwerp and its people.

Auctioneer Peter Bernaerts motivates: "Every day an auctioneer stands between dozens of canvases and panels, ready for expertise, research or auction, with a diagnostic view that does not allow too much emotional assimilation with the artist, but places the work in a certain time and context". A painter must paint is Weidenbaums adagio, which means he can by definition count on our commitment, he is an artist who still manages craftsmanship very much.

CrossOver

Utter yet suspect calm before the storm: that’s the tense atmosphere rising from Weidenbaum’s testimony of a moment and a place, in a game of light in the dark, day in the night, emptiness in plenty, brightness in darkness, reality in illusion, presence under absence: stirring life’s truths under the lies of art.

The Consumption of The Suffering

The story Peter Weidenbaum tells in The Consumption of The Suffering is a retrosymbolic narrative in three dimensions. It shows images that are both massive and unique. They are all iconic representations that encompass a spectrum ranging from the bestial to the divine. They are charged with the mythical energy imbued in our daily life, as intense as it is subtle, but we only feel connected with this energy when we are reminded of it. If it presents itself, it does so suddenly. When we enter the church we can therefore hardly experience the three parts of the installation just like that, unsuspecting, without a why and wherefore. Just for once, the religious surroundings are not intended for religious devotion or mere spiritual contemplation. The aesthetic experience that The Consumption of The Suffering induces is not a dogmatic confession of faith, it is a public perception of reminiscence and catharsis, it is a modern evocation of universal suffering.

(Part of the text for the exhibition “The Consumption of The Suffering”, by Tom de Mette, 2010, in The Sint Baafskerk, Aardenburg, The Netherlands.)

In 2007 for the Whats Real? exhibition at Freemen Gallery, Weidenbaum paints images archived with his digital camera or screened on the internet. The digital approach with oil paint on canvas gives him the opportunity to present a different view of reality. He shows the Western society in its overload of images and questions us about their recognisability.

Wargames 003

Using the title “Wargames 003”, Weidenbaum refers to a virtual environment and Internet games. The work is aimed at the young visitor but leaves them with a number of questions. By taking away its function, the toy becomes a desolate spot in the Brabant landscape. Intervention concerning modifications in the agrarian landscape, wooden sculpture with fencing in war colours.

Invitation Expo Layers

The more ordinary the stranger. Weidenbaum reflects on the world around him. First at the paint marks on the trees, an international code that only a few people understand. Then he looks from the towers, creating a peculiar perspective. Afterwards he takes us to the forest. Not a pleasant nature walk, but bewitched perspectives confuse our view. Afterwards to the big city. Streets, squares and monuments, seem like pictures in a tourist guide. Until we look closely, we recognize the social power relations that prevail in the city.

Passing by

Passing by, 2006/2008 Brussels. Using the title ‘Passing by’, Peter Weidenbaum develops a poetic symbolism that corresponds to his artistic expression. He publishes a magazine where he shows one of his quadriptych in combination with a poem by Agnieszka Kuciak and different interviews with local habitants. In this way, almost all residents in the Montgomery district take part in the work of art. Through the fusion between word and image, they become spectators of his intervention. He describes his intervention like an infiltration in the district where his personal presence merely represents a swift passing. Newspaper, painting route, sculpture and poems in stainless steel and concrete pedestal at Montgomery.

Weidenbaums work goes back to a number of archetypes: the tree, man, animals, life and death, energy and ramifications. Material and patina sculptures, paintings and drawings in Weidenbaums play an important role. Wagner seems to be the art to conceive as a zone in which contact with a reality above or below the visible world looks up or can be restored from a mystical experience of materials and shapes.

You take the forest into your head. The smell becomes turpentine. Leaves become sheets of paper. You cut the stone in plaster. Take the surface in torn cotton. Fibers, memories, pigments are mixed. Green and blue become gray. The etching press turns, creaking branches, they throw black lines on the wet paper. I stand outside, see floating cloud masses and know, for a moment I was in the whole.
